‘Stealth Layoffs’ At Top Law Firms Begin

We know about the Twitter firings, but that is not the only tech firm or law firm that is laying off lawyers and others as the cascade of pink slips continues.

AbovetheLaw reports that ‘stealth layoffs’ from top law firms have begun with hiring freezes and deferred start dates for those lawyers already recruited.

The hit upon the legal market with slowing M&A and other transactional work has certainly dimmed the otherwise rosy outlook for Big Law across the world. Inflation, recession, rising interest rates are all having their impact.

One Bay Area recruiter who commented to ATL on the cuts said, “Lawyers can now know the bloodbath has begun.” Yikes. Other recruiters cautioned, however, that legal departments are less likely to feel the hit when it comes to layoffs than other divisions.

“Although it is currently unclear exactly how many lawyers were let go during this round of layoffs, former in-house counsel can rest assured that their job prospects are good — outside of the tech sector, of course.”
